At the beginning of 2017 we started using a new to us material for laser cutting the Katrinkles tools, a domestic hardwood called Alder.  It is native to the Notheastern United States and is sustainable and renewable. It is custom milled to our specifications by a local mill in Rhode Island.

What I love about this beautiful wood is the natural sparkle of its surface.  The caramel color is similar to that of the bamboo I've been using but it's grain competes less with etching, allowing the numbers on the face of each knitting needle gauge to be more prominent and easy to read.  Its beauty, durability and eco friendliness make it the ideal wood for laser cutting Katrinkles knitting needle gauges, gauge swatch rulers and wraps per inch tools.
